How We Can Help

What We Do

Supporting You Through Your Journey

All our clients will receive their very own named midwife and backup midwife to support them physically and emotionally, every step of the way through their amazing journey.

Your midwife will get to know you during your pregnancy and be by your side, supporting your wishes, giving you information, interpreting results, helping you to make decisions and ensuring you feel nurtured, safe and cared for. We only accept a limited number of clients each month, which allows us to ensure we are always available for you when you go into labour.

Why Choose Us?

Many of our clients are also booked under the NHS system, but unfortunately, they have found that their visits are short, infrequent and they never see the same midwife twice. We aim to support your maternity care either by supplementing the NHS service or replacing it.

Some of the benefits of having an independent midwife include:
  • Knowing your midwife throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period.
  • More likely to successfully breastfeed
  • 24 hour on call
  • Frequent visits at convenient appointment times in your home
  • Lower rates of intervention and assisted births or caesarean section
  • Faster recovery time
  • A positive pregnancy and birthing experience

Our Services

Free Consultation

We offer a one-off free consultation that gives you a better picture of the services we provide and allows you the opportunity to get to know us before booking our services.

Antenatal Home Visits

Conveniently, we carry out all our visits in the comfort of your home, providing antenatal checks to ensure both you and your baby remain safe and well. Visits not only include a full antenatal assessment, but we also discuss a range of topics such as diet and nutrition, signs of labour, water birthing, delayed cord clamping, breastfeeding, and many more. You will have two midwives who will alternate visits and get to know you during your pregnancy. There will also be a third midwife available should there be an unlikely unforeseen event where your midwives are unavailable. Our home visits usually last an hour and are at a time and date to suit you. We usually recommend that antenatal visits be carried out every 4 weeks until you are 28 weeks gestation then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks gestation, then weekly until you go into labour. This gives you almost twice the number of visits currently provided on the NHS. Depending on the package of care you choose with us, we can either supplement your visits with the NHS or replace them.

Postnatal Home Visits

As with our antenatal visits, your midwives will carry out postnatal checks in the convenience of your home. If you have a home birth we will visit you later the same day at home, and recommend that you see us daily during the first five days. This is necessary when providing you with support in breastfeeding, early new-born problems and the prevention of infections. We believe prevention is better than a cure. If you are expecting your first baby, we would recommend you have at least eight postnatal visits over the first two-three weeks after birth. We are on hand to support you with diet & nutrition, exercise, recovery, care of perineal tears or wounds, breastfeeding support, natural healing, remedies, new-born jaundice, feeding issues, weights, skincare, eye & cord care, colic, reflux, signs of an unwell baby and many other topics.

Hospital Labour Support

We currently have a unique contract with Chelsea & Westminster Hospital that allows us to provide clinical midwifery care on their birthing centre. This means we can be your lead carers during your early labour at home and then once you are in established labour, we can continue to look after you (in a clinical capacity) on their birthing centre. If you plan to have your baby on the labour ward or if you transfer to one because your labour is no longer a low risk, we can still accompany you but will act as an advocate and support only since you will be under the obstetric team.

Our midwives may also provide you with advocacy and support (non-clinical role) at the birthing centre if we have already exceeded a safe number of working hours by the time you arrive at the hospital. As we will have assisted you during your pregnancy to create a birth plan and so know what you want, we can help you to achieve your ideal birth. If you attend a hospital other than Chelsea and Westminster, we will be unable to provide you with labour hospital attendance after 30th June 2020.

Home Birth

Home is where many people feel the most comfortable and relaxed. Having one to one support from your independent midwives can allow you to have a positive birth experience with home comforts like your bed when you need it most. We help you prepare for your homebirth, ensuring you feel fully supported and equipped. As with our hospital birth option, we are covered for homebirths via Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Should you need to transfer into the hospital during or following a home birth, we can attend Chelsea & Westminster Hospital with you unless we need to attend a different hospital due to an emergency (after 30th June 2020), we would not be able to stay with you during your hospital stay.

You may be undecided on a home birth but with My Private Midwife, you need not decide until you are in labour. We can support you with home water births, hypnobirthing, instinctive birthing, delayed cord clamping, and placental encapsulation. We usually stay with you for between two to four hours after birth to ensure the safety of you and your baby before we leave.

Water Birth

A water birth is a lovely way to enter labour and deliver your baby. It creates a relaxed and calm environment, which in turn helps encourage a natural labour hormone Oxytocin. This can encourage quicker, easier labour for you and a gentler entry into the world for your baby. Our midwives are experts in water births both in hospital and at home. There are many benefits to choosing a water birth, for example, the warm water acts as natural pain relief. Most couples choose to have dimmed lighting, music, candles, and partners can become more involved in the birth.

One-off Antenatal or Postnatal Visit

For any unexpected care and support you may need we offer one-off Antenatal or Postnatal visits. These visits are usually used to supplement NHS care. We can visit you at home and discuss your current care with the NHS or you may wish to see us after 36 weeks to discuss alternatives to induction of labour, assist with making a birth plan, or because you want the convenience of a home visit.

24 Hour On-Call

At a time where you will have a lot of questions, we are on call 24/7, to provide you with advice, support or for emergencies and labour. You have a dedicated number that will come straight through to your named midwife but in the event, she is on another call or with a client, you will have a named second and third midwife. You will get you to know two of your midwives well.

WhatsApp Group Chat

It creates a friendly and secure place where you can ask any questions or advice, arrange appointments, send pictures, scan reports, and blood test results. It also gives you easy access to both your primary and secondary midwife in one place.
